J. Steve Smith, M.D. – Steve Smith is currently in his 8th year of coaching within the Vipers organization. He is the head coach of the 15U Vipers and is an Assistant Baseball Coach at North Oldham High School. He has been coaching and instructing baseball for 20 years.
Steve played baseball collegiately at Western Kentucky University. He graduated in 1997 from WKU with a degree in Biology and received his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Kentucky in 2001. He completed his Orthopedic Surgery residency at the University of Rochester. While there, Steve served on the medical staff for the Rochester Red Wings, a Triple A minor league baseball franchise in the Twins organization. He furthered his training by completing a Sports Medicine Fellowship in Los Angeles at Kerlan Jobe. While in California, he served on the medical staff for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Lakers among several other professional and collegiate programs.
Dr. Smith is an Orthopedic Surgeon with Louisville Orthopedic Clinic and is the Medical Director of Baptist Sports Medicine. “Baseball has an abundance of principles that can help young people grow and develop within the game of life. When players make that connection, their game grows exponentially.”
Steve’s son, Jay, is a catcher on the 15U team and has begun the collegiate recruiting process.
